Welcome
The Southeast Conference and Alaska: Better Together
At the recent Men’s Retreat 51 men from the Southeast Conference(SEC) joined Rodney Sawyer in exploring our partnership in faith. Rodney Sawyer fills the role of Field Director of the Covenant churches in the Alaskaregion. You may be wondering what this partnership and friendship looks like. I had the same thought going into the retreat, and was excited to spend two days learning about Alaskaas well as the bonds that had been formed in recent years between the SEC and Alaska. On opening night, Bob Tenglin (retired SEC pastor) gave a great overview of the history of the Covenant Church in Alaska. He outlined how the SEC has sent mission trips to Alaska and partnered with specific ministries like the radio station KICY and the CovenantChurch in Bethel. These partnerships are exhibited by the SEC raising funds for new insulation for the parsonage and church in Bethelas well as Bob Tenglin’s ongoing contribution to the radio show CareForce at KICY.
The main goal of the retreat was to explore and deepen the relationships that have already been established with the Alaska ministries. We explored these relationships in two ways: 1) our common lives and activities as men of faith 2) a video conference call with Pastor Hugh at Bethel tobetter understand his churches needs. During Rodney’s sessions, we learned what it was like to live and be a man in Alaska. We talked a great deal about the adventure all men seek and what it means to be real men in this world, to know ourselves and acknowledge our weaknesses. These sessions were very thought provoking and led to some great conversations and laughter. The highlight of the retreat was our video conference call with Pastor Hugh via Skype. There were some technical challenges in setting up the call, including working around the four hour time difference, but the call worked out well. It was a joy to see Pastor Hugh’s face, as well as ask him questions and pray for his church. In the call, we explored how our conference could continue to stand by him and his ministry. We also asked five men from the SEC to establish a long term relationship with five men from Bethel Covenant. Though the distance between us is about 4000 miles, we left the conference call feeling quite a bit closer to each other. For all of the men, it was a great time to reconnect and acknowledge that when we stand with each other we are better together.
